Zona Romántica

The city's living room.

If a single neighborhood is what people mean when they say 'Puerto Vallarta,' this is it. The Zona Romántica is the bright, busy, beach-edge half-mile south of the pier — cobblestone streets, stacked rooftop bars, taco counters with three stools, and, at the center of everything, the malecón itself.

The malecón

It is a mile of walkway between the ocean and the old town. Open-air sculpture, street musicians, the best people-watching in Mexico. If you have one evening in the city, you spend it here. The sand is fine, the water is warm, and somewhere a mariachi band is always starting.

Where to eat

El Arrayán for Mexican comfort. Barracuda for rooftop seafood. La Leche for a date. Marisma for lunch tacos. The best birria in Vallarta is at a stand called Birriería las 9 Esquinas and it is one room and six plastic chairs.

The LGBTQ+ city

The Romantic Zone is, in practice, the largest LGBTQ+ destination in Mexico — sometimes called the Castro of Latin America. It is warm, open, and has been that way for forty years. The neighborhood's tone is a big part of why it is the neighborhood everyone ends up loving.

Somewhere a mariachi band is always starting.
